  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To estimate the long-term progression and mortality in a
  10.        cohort of intravenous drug users (IDUs). METHODS: 204 (157 men, 47
  11.        women) IDUs admitted to detoxification treatment between 2/1/87 and
  12.        1/31/89 were consecutively assessed in the second semester of 1993.
  13.        RESULTS: Mean age: 25 years; length of addiction: 47 months; Prevalence
  14.        HIV(+): 67%. Available data were obtained in 81.8% of admitted IDUs
  15.        (167/204). TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: There is an
  16.        excess of deaths among young injecting drug users in Barcelona. AIDS and
  17.        overdose has expanded from a problem that appears to affect a great
  18.        number of heroin injectors.
