AB OBJECTIVE: To estimate the long-term progression and mortality in a
cohort of intravenous drug users (IDUs). METHODS: 204 (157 men, 47
women) IDUs admitted to detoxification treatment between 2/1/87 and
1/31/89 were consecutively assessed in the second semester of 1993.
RESULTS: Mean age: 25 years; length of addiction: 47 months; Prevalence
HIV(+): 67%. Available data were obtained in 81.8% of admitted IDUs
(167/204). TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS: There is an
excess of deaths among young injecting drug users in Barcelona. AIDS and
overdose has expanded from a problem that appears to affect a great
number of heroin injectors.
